Why SRS?

SCOI diligently researched many electronic health record (EHR) solutions. The SRS EHR was the only one that SCOI was confident would deliver increases in productivity and efficiency, allow for individual doctors’ real-life practices, and provide the highest level of customer service and support.

Rapid Return on Investment
The financial benefits of implementing and using the SRS EHR arrived faster than anticipated. When SCOI first went live on SRS, they had 21 medical records staff whose responsibilities revolved around the inbound and outbound pulling and storing of charts. After only 6-8 months, the number of medical records staff decreased to 7! After 18 months of using the SRS EHR, all 88,000 paper charts were gone and SCOI had reduced its medical records staff to 4 members through attrition or reallocation of duties. SCOI estimates their cost savings in the first 6 months after going live on SRS to be approximately $534,000. Furthermore, as a direct result of eliminating paper charts, space previously used at one of their locations to house patient charts was converted into 2 revenue-generating procedure rooms. These decreases in the number of FTEs and overhead costs are expenses saved across the practice, benefiting all doctors.

Strengthening the Physicians’ Bottom Lines
There were financial benefits in other areas of the practice as well. One of SCOI’s physicians, Dr. Guanche, had been spending approximately $4,400 per month on transcription expenses. In 2009, both he and his P.A. began using the SRS Orthopaedic FlexNote. A little more than a year later, he had virtually eliminated his transcription expense using the SRS EHR. That equates to nearly $53,000 in annual savings from only 1 physician.

Another SCOI physician, Dr. Karzel, had monthly transcription costs averaging $4,800. After initiating a pilot program with the use of SRS Transcription, Dr. Karzel reduced his average monthly bill to approximately $900 each month—a savings of $3,900 each month, representing a decrease of over 80%.

These transcription savings represent direct savings to these 2 physicians, and are an encouragement to other physicians to cut their expenses as well.

Maximizing Physician and Staff Workflow Efficiency
SCOI is constantly moving forward and enhancing their workflow with the SRS EHR—as the system matures, so do the workflows. From the physicians to the support staff, everyone at the practice experiences the benefits of the SRS EHR, and the changes have been significant.

The physicians take comfort in the flexibility and power of the SRS EHR. The robust functionality of the Interoperability Dashboard includes user-defined fields that auto-populate with physician-selected data. The messaging and communication capabilities of the SRS EHR allow physicians to easily track physical therapy and MRI requests through a selected pool of users. With less time spent on documentation, physicians move more quickly to the next patient, saving time and money. What’s more, both physicians and staff members now respond to patient inquiries more promptly and with more accurate and up-to-date information. Their rapid response times have increased patient satisfaction. Perhaps most exciting is that the physician teams that care for the patients have become more efficient at their tasks, and support has evolved so that it no longer takes a village, but rather just a family.

Since the successful implementation of the SRS EHR, SCOI now speaks with one voice—the staff has embraced the SRS EHR and works proactively to collaborate on ways to enhance technological efficiency at all their locations. During meetings, staff members brainstorm creative ways to more effectively automate their workflow processes and provide enhanced patient care. The intuitiveness and ease of use of the SRS EHR enhances the workflow at SCOI and helps drive operational costs down.

Independence and Empowerment with Templates and Forms
SCOI independently created over 2,500 templated forms with maximum utilization of macros. Kathy Wells, Director of Administrative Support, attended the forms training class at SRS’s annual user conference and returned to SCOI able to create and edit forms instantaneously. A unique checkbox template was created for one physician who sees 70 patients each day, to simplify the documentation of history and clinical data (H&P). Anatomically correct patient forms were created that can be sorted by sub-specialty. Furthermore, the seamless integration of the SRS EHR with SCOI’s practice management solution enables the forms to be auto-populated with comprehensive demographic and discrete data.

Benefiting from the Right Technology
SCOI knew they had found the right technology for their large group when everyone—physicians and staff—was on board with the SRS EHR. Thanks to the easy training, the physicians were comfortable with SRS from the start. Their time spent with patients has not been hindered, and having all patient data organized and readily available has actually helped enhance patient care.

The administrative and support staff also benefit greatly from the SRS EHR. Operational costs have decreased and everyday tasks now require fewer steps, making the SCOI team a more efficient medical practice.

The SRS EHR was the right tool—the right technology—for SCOI. Throughout the practice, physicians are happy, the staff enjoys using the software, and mostly importantly, it has enhanced the overall quality of this large, high-performance practice. SRS helped SCOI streamline the present while preparing them for the future with the SRS EHR.
