Stages and Reporting Periods

Stages and Reporting Periods

Meaningful use was designed in 3 stages, the requirements for each successive stage building upon and advancing to a higher level those of the prior stage, encouraging providers to gradually increase their EHR use. An EP’s first reporting period for any provider is always 90 days.

The stage structure of the EHR Incentive Program was revised in the Final Rule, Stage 3 and Modifications to Meaningful Use in 2015 through 2017, published on October 6, 2015. The changes move all providers to the same stage of MU—“Modified Stage 2”—which will simplify management and administration of the program on both the national and practice levels. Having all participating providers working toward the same objectives should make it easier for everyone to meet those objectives and related measures.

The chart below summarizes the pre- and post-Modification Rule structure of MU reporting.
